The Present

The Present

I gave her a lovely present
this curious child of mine
The paper that wrapped it
sported winged angels so kind
pastel blue with yellow ribbon
a big box of surprise inside

The gift it held was a lovely doll
a face that looked like a child
the dress lace-trimmed in silk
little shoes made of cowhide
hair that shone like cornsilk
a barrette in the top I spied

She opened the box and looked in
the huge cardboard carton
pulled out the beautiful doll
and the tissues began to parting

Paper tossed in every direction
the doll flew over a chair
and you guessed it – my child
ended up sitting where … ?

in the cardboard box
pretending it was a bed
then driving it around and
butting it with her head

I should have given her
the box as a gift
and spent my money
on groceries.
