Kicking Frogs
Did you hear the story
of two frogs who were friends?
They were committed to each other
and vowed to be friends to the end.
Well, lefty was struggler, not a quitter, a survivor
He would hang right on a task until tomorrow.
Fats was a little lazy, nothing moved but tongue
But great were the notes in the croaks that he sung.
One day they were playing on the farmhouse porch
after a shower that had followed a real scorcher.
They played ‘round and jumped into the churn of milk
which was denser than water so they both began to slip.
They kicked and croaked while the rain poured down
but the sleeping farmer's family heard not their sounds.
The two kicked right on way into the night
but Fats gave up and bid his friend goodbye.
Lefty begged him not to quit, coaxed him, and cajoled
but Fats decided it was useless and soon gave up his soul.
Come morning the farmer's wife approached the place,
apron on tight, with a ready-to-work face.
And what she saw made her tender heart flutter
Fats laying dead in the bottom and
Lefty sitting on a churn full of butter.
It shows what happens if we just hang in
When things look too bad to ever win.
