The Great Equalizer

the great equalizer

I saw it with my own eyes …

man, was I surprised
when I realized …

they were all there,
some alone, some in pairs
lounging together, so diverse
brought together for better or worse
soldiers, lawyers, plumbers, teachers
waiters, doctors, unemployed speakers
secretaries, prostitutes, and preachers
laborers, writers, and illiterate creatures

never thought I'd see the days
all those people in just one place
class status truly eliminated
names and dates clearly stated

as I strolled through and greeted them all
the grass so green, the stones so tall
it occurred to me, there they lay buried
in the great equalizer –
the cemetery
