Between us there is a huge void fixed,
A distance between you,
The spiritual,
And the still material me,
Not rock and clay nor water and sun,
No stars, no clouds, no highways,
Between us there is nothing but
A void so hard to comprehend
That no man can explain it
And prayer be the only way
I can still speak to you
Though I never know
If you even hear me.

You are in death,
Whatever and wherever that is.
I am still alive on mother earth
Pondering what it's like,
Where is your new abode,
Laws that prevented us
From being together forever?

Death's gulf of voidness is very real
Though not to man
Because scientists cannot test tube it,
Prove it and control it.
But, real it is as the void between
Heaven and hell
And our two hearts.

Maybe one day when I, too, pass over,
Become subject to the laws you have,
I will see and fully understand
That once ago we were woman and man
And lived upon this sphere of clay,
On our side of some other void
Of nothing.
