Gretchen's Soup Kitchen
wet
nonchalant
flying
The local soup kitchen
Was begging for volunteers
That's how I met Gretchen
A beautiful lady from Germany heritage
She had long blonde hair and blue eyes
With a book in her lap she was staring at the page
She was acting timid and scared
I decided to welcome her
And to show her someone cared
People were shivering some were crying
So many to help, I said hi and welcome
Just then someone tripped sending dishes flying
She acted as nonchalant as I hugged her to me
And she seemed to sigh and shrug
Pulling back from me
I said “we need volunteers can you help us?”
She smiled as we handed her a bowl of soup
Refused it and started to really fuss
We offered her hot soup and a place to stay
She looked so worn out and exhausted
She said “I have no money, I can not pay”
Gretchen still runs the soup kitchen
And has for the past 9 years
Thank God for Gretchen
