Into Melancholia

I hit the road, destination,
Fixed firmly in my mind,
The busy rush hour traffic, now gone,
And all is quiet,
Now, only the deserted road lies before me,
With the delicate rolling hills on either side of me,
And the sun sitting high above me,

My mood pensive, mind vacant,
Yet firmly in control,
Cocooned and protected,
Within the shiny black carriage,
I view the open road before me,
And glance to see nothing behind,

I seem alone in this world,
The silence around me, now irritates,
And I crave the sound,
Of another voice,
The radio will suffice,
In this hour of need,
And soon music fills my space,
The melody, sad and mournful,
The lyrics, sombre,
Speaking only of lost love, and despair,
And I sink further, faster,
Into melancholia,

I hear myself sigh,
But let the singer sing,
Just this one last song,
And, in an attempt to regain my composure,
I reach for the silent switch,
And allow only the sun,
To penetrate the gloom.
