The Hitchhiker (chapter 3)

I was on my wayout of the
washroom for a second time.
I passed by a man,
that was drenched by the rain.
He looked like a quiet man.
As I walked past him,
I could feel his eyes
burning a hole right through me.

I could feel the hair on the back
of my neck standing up.
I turned around to see
if he was still staring at me.
To my surprise,
he vanished.
Just as quick as I spotted him,
he was gone.
I walked up to the counter,
payed the store clerk what I owed
him for the gas
and headed for the door.

Store Clerk: "Would that be all miss?"

I turned around, walked back
to the counter and grabbed a
couple of chocolate bars
for the road.

Me: "I'll take these too, please."

My hands were shaking, as I
placed the chocolate bars on the counter.

Store Clerk: "Are you okay miss?"

Me: "I'm not used to being on
a dark highway by myself
in a storm."

Store Clerk: "We have a room in the back,
if you want to stay for the night."

Me: "No, that's okay. I have
a babysitter taking care of my kids
and she's probably wondering
where I am."
