The Hitchhiker (chapter 9)
There hasn't been a hit and run
accident in the past few months.
I was finally on the
last stretch to home.
I was glad.
I turned the radio off.
I didn't want to hear about
anymore murders.
That's the way it always is,
somebody ends up getting drunk
and gets behind the wheel.
I pulled into the driveway,
shut the car off and got out.
Tony was still sleeping,
so I left him there.
I had a blanket in the back seat.
I leaned over, grabbed the blanket
and covered Tony up with it.
I quietly shut the car door.
It was about 3:30am.
I didn't expect to take
so long getting home.
If I didn't have to make three stops
on the way, I would have been
home a long time ago.
I walked up to the door to the house,
put my key into the lock,
turned the knob and walked in.
I closed the door behind me,
set my keys and purse on the table
and walked into the livingroom.
The babysitter was sound asleep
on the couch.
I didn't want to disturb her,
so I left her alone.
I sat down in a chair next
to the fireplace.
I was too tired to walk all the
way upstairs to go to bed.
I grabbed a blanket that was
sitting on the hope chest,
sat back down in the chair
and drifted off to sleep.
